Style Series: Work Wear – Casual Friday
Welcome to the third installment of my Work Wear Series! I’m talking about Casual Friday today! As a whole our society has become increasingly casual. Gone are the days when we would dress up to fly on airplanes and go out to dinner, we used to write letters and call people on the telephone. Now we text business associates and sweat are a common staple for most of us. So naturally the dress in the workplace has become more relaxed as well especially on Casual Fridays. I’m a firm believer that the way you dress in the workplace affects how you are perceived. So coming to work in ill-fitting worn out jeans and a baggy old tee shirt tells upper management that work isn’t important to you and that you don’t care about your job. Yeah clothes say a lot! Taking just a few extra minutes to put on a pulled together look can send a much more positive message and will make you feel better. I believe if you feel good you have much more confidence and looking good is tied to how you feel.
I love taking advantage of wearing jeans on Fridays but I still want to look effortlessly pulled together and professional. This look is my go to! I paired a thrifted black and white striped blouse with a black vest that I have had for years. A vest is a great alternative to a blazer if blazers are not your thing. You might be asking why do you need a vest? Well I wore this in the Fall so it was appropriate. Also I think it’s been indoctrinated in me from my college years about three pieces. When I worked for Express in college the Managers were required to wear 3 pieces at all times. So me being me I always want to dress for the part in life I want not the current position I have I always wore three pieces. And then of course after years of watching What Not to Wear and they preached about “completer pieces.” These lessons learned and developed in my formative years have stuck with me all this time. So that’s why I have on a vest! You don’t have to wear a vest or blazer but it does take the look to the next level. I prefer more structured pieces like blazers and vest to downplay my chest area and to enhance my waist. If structure isn’t your thing you can add a flowy vest or blazer over a blouse for a more bohemian vibe, or add a leather jacket on top for a little edge, or throw a sweater over the blouse. Adding layers to your outfit elevates your outfit. See the other parts of my work wear series here in Creating a Modern Suit and Shorts@Work.
